Vizcom is a tool by designers for designers. Specifically industrial designers. With that in mind, most use cases I have seen are product or automotive design focused. That being said, the tool can do much more than that, and overtime I foresee more and more disciplines using it.
In this video you can see how I utilized Vizcom to give me some big picture passes at packaging design.
My takeaways?
Here is the good:
- You can get general themes easily implemented into packages, in unique ways.
- You can get a lot of variations of a theme quickly.
- When your setup is dialed, you can quickly and easily swap out images for a wide range of exploration.
And here is the not so good:
- You can’t do typography well.
- You can’t control the placement of graphics.
Overall, you’re looking at a workflow that is good to go from 0 to 1, but not yet quite there to go beyond that.
A bit of the process.
The Vizcom ‘auto-selection’ tool is making things a lot easier. Especially in the realm of packaging ideation. In this fast workflow, we demonstrate a method by which to experiment with multiple visual styles in the context of an existing packaging concept.
- Use Midjourney to create a packaging concept with different visual elements that can be used as the bones of the design. The underlay.
- Use Midjourney to generate several 2D style reference images for VDL experimentation.
- Take the base design into Vizcom and use the auto-selection tool to isolate different sections of the packaging.
- Load up the style reference images into the reference image field to impart unique designs onto the existing elements within the packaging, by playing around with reference image and drawing influence weights to get the right amount of image inspiration to come through.
Give it a try.
