Micro-Decisions for Ai-Enhanced Design

I posted this video on a Krea exploration recently. It seemed to resonate with some and bother others. That led to the video taking off.

I like to respond to comments but at some point I had to step away for my own mental sanity. That being said, there are some great points, counterpoints and everything in between in there. For those of you that want to get a sense of where creative folk’s heads are at on the topic of Ai, jump in the comments.

My takeaways:

  1. I think it really resonated with designers because the-real time, micro-decision nature of the video illustrated how important the human designer is in this process. It looks and feels like “ai-enhanced”, not “ai does it all for us”.
  2. The legal and ethical challenges are real and a contentious point. People called the video an exercise in micro-thefts. Others focused on the legal ramifications of it all. I don’t have definitive answers to any of this. I’m pretty sure nobody does, but I’m sure we’re all headed towards answers.

The discussions will continue raging on.

We’ll continue better understanding what’s going on under the hood of all these tools, to better form our opinions.

Legal battles will continue moving forward, like the ongoing OpenAI vs NYT case. As Barry Scannell, a leading AI law expert puts it, “as the case progresses, it will undoubtedly shape the dialogue around copyright law, AI, and their collective impact on the future of content creation and consumption.” You can read his full post here.

NEWS

Ai Services to Help Dress Up Your Home

I stumbled on to Mark Wilson’s latest article for Fast Company. This one about Venus William’s latest endeavor, an Ai interior design platform called Palazzo.

With this service, you snap a photo of your room of choice, you upload it and then ask it to visualize your room in different styles.

From the looks of it, it seems like a fun app. I could see it sticking.

You can read the full piece here. I have a lot of thoughts on this topic, but the most pressing one is what happens to interior designers?

No one knows the stats yet, but my guess is most users of this type of tool are folks that are not even considering hiring an interior designer. And now they’ll be dabbling in it, getting ideas, thinking of what can be. Maybe they’ll buy a piece or two to dress up their room. Maybe they’ll see how hard it is to turn this into a reality and hire help. Maybe they’ll leave it at a fun idea on the screen.

Time will tell, but I’m sure we’ll see this play out across many creative functions, so I’ll be keeping an eye on this.

 EVENTS

Ai for Creative Leaders Recording

A had a great time chatting with good folks at LoftSherry and Gregor, as well as Ryan from Maker. There was a great turnout with an active chatroom. Questions came up about the legalalities of AI, design education and so much more.

If you have an hour to spare, you can give it a listen here!

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend and see you early next week for more ai + creative goodness.
